Anti-corruption watchdog acknowledges Haiti's efforts to fight corrupt practices.

(HCNN)-- An anti-corruption watchdog, Heritage Foundation for Haiti, a local branch of Transparency International, recognized on Monday that the Haitian government has taken a number of steps to fight corruption, but that a lot remained to be done to significantly reduce corrupt practices which have for long stained the reputation of the impoverished Caribbean country.

Marilyn Alien, who heads the Heritage Foundation for Haiti, said the Haitian government and Parliament have taken a number of steps likely to bring accountability within the public administration in terms of fighting corruption and frauds.

"The government is taking actions to allow Haiti, not to eliminate corruption because corruption has never been eliminated anywhere in the world, but at least to make corruption a practice that is punished in Haiti, that is unacceptable and that is rejected by the society," said Alien in an interview on Monday to a radio station in the Haitian capital.

"Haiti could change its image and become an honest State and that would be very good not only for the government, but for the country and all Haitians," Alien said.
The anti-corruption advocacy group contributes to the annual corruption perception index report of Transparency International, in which countries around the world are ranked. Haiti was ranked 165th in 2012.

Judicial proceedings have been initiated against more than 70 State functionaries and other individuals indicted on corruption and public funds embezzlement charges. Several of them have already been arrested and jailed.

Haitian President Michel Martelly and Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe have repeatedly reiterated their commitment to fighting corruption and have increased the anti-corruption Unit budget by more than 40 percent and provided additional logistical means to help it fight corruption more effectively.
