Santo Domingo.- The Denationalized Peoples Solidarity Committee on Friday stated "victory" with the bill submitted by president Danilo Medina to Congress Thursday to allow mostly Dominicans of Haitian descent to opt for naturalization, local media report.
They say the proposed legislation, which many sectors say pulls those people affected out of a legal limbo, “is an effort by the Government to find just and humane solution to the drama during eight decades of the denationalization of tens of thousands of descendants who obtained citizenship by being born in the country, based on jus soli which Dominican constitutions established until 2010 ".
"We understand that the piece as a compromise that avoids confronting the ruling 168-13 and finds a way to correct its main iniquity which is having ordered the dispossession of nationality, retroactively up to eight decades, from so many whom had acquired it," they said in a statement.
The Committee stressed that it was born "with a spirit of solidarity" to promote a solution to the drama of the denationalized people, proclaiming the rule of reason and respect for rights and the diversity of Dominican society, rebuking hatred, prejudice and discrimination.
That’s the reason they celebrate "as a victory that the Government proposes to recognize the nationality of those who’re issued then by Civil Status officials," they said in statement.
