Life in northern Haiti in general and the city of Cape Haitian in particular is about to change for the better.
As of Thursday October 2nd, American Airlines will become the first major air carrier to offer commercial jet service to Haiti's second largest city.
It's been almost 50 years in the making. Not since the opening of Port-au-Prince's International airport in 1965 has any renown international airline touched down outside of the capital. The Martelly/Lamothe administration's idea of development goes through decentralization and allowing the rest of the country to benefit from tourism. The grand opening of the Hugo Chavez International Airport in the City of Cap Haitien is a testimony to that train of thought and modern vision of leadership.
The Boeing 757 that will land this Thursday in the city of Cap Haitien will have a special passenger on board. President Michel Martelly flew to Miami late Wednesday specifically to fly back on flight 1462 and be part of this historic moment.
American Airlines will get to enjoy northern hospitality as the region has prepared a grand ceremony to mark this great event. Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe will join President Martelly on this special occasion. They will be joined by several members of the government, including the Minister of Public Works Jacques Rousseau, the Secretary of State for Public Works Philippe Cineas, the Minister of Tourism Stephanie Balmir Villedrouin, and the Ambassador of Venezuela to Haiti Pedro Antonio Canino González.
The international airport of Cap-Haitien, completely restored and renovated, has a runway that measures 8,500 feet long and 138 feet wide. It will also include a fully equipped a fire station whose construction is underway.
The construction of the Cap Haitien International Airport marks a turning point in the socio-economic reality of northern Haiti. A new portal is now open to the world.
