PARADISE ISLAND — The Best Western Premier Haiti will open its doors March 15, according to Best Western Regional Director Tom Osborn.

The hotel, in the Petion-Ville neighbourhood of Port-au-Prince, had originally targeted an opening date before 2013, but delays brought the project to March.

The property's grand opening will occur sometime in April, according to Osborn, who was speaking at a press conference at the CHTA Caribbean Travel Marketplace at the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas.

The 106-unit hotel will feature a full gymnasium, several restaurants, a lounge and indoor-outdoor pools.

"It's a fantastic location, great visibility, great restaurants right within the area," he said. "It's a very exciting project for us, to be the first major corporation in that market."

The hotel, which is owned by Haitians, will have around 40 to 60 employees, he said.

"Obviously it was a challenge to get in [to Haiti]; there was a lot we went through on that market," he said. "But with the UN right there, the military presence right there, I think their doors will be full before they open."

It's the newest hotel to open in Haiti, following Occidental's five-star Royal Oasis, which debuted at the end of December.

"You hope to see that make a change in the infrastructure, in the tourism market," he said. "And that's what everybody would like to see in the future."

Haiti, which has been making a concerted effort to develop the tourism sector in the country, has added support on the project, he said.

"[The Ministry] has been great 100 percent behind the project," he said. "There's a lot of interior promotion from them as well — so it's gotten nothing but support from everybody on this project."

Best Western currently has four properties in the Caribbean; by the end of this year that number will have reached seven.

Encore dans son texte, Jean-Junior avoue son impuissance. En me faisant passer pour un agent de Washington, il s'est avoué vaincu. Car, Washington, c'est de grand moyen. Je pense qu'on peut toujours discuter de la situation du pays, critiquer le pouvoir en place; mais c'est révoltant de voir une minorité chercher à s'imposer comme incontournable. De port-au-Prince étant, ils se prennent pour les maitres d'Haiti, ignorant l'opinion du peuple.

Quand à ceux de la presse, de la société civile et de la classe politique qui font semblant d'ignorer les conséquences des 30 ans de dictature Duvaliériste et des 25 ans de destruction Lavalas sur le pays, je ne les prends pas au sérieux. Le peuple non plus d'ailleurs, ne les prend pas au sérieux. Ce sont des ridicules, des prétentieux hautains à ignorer. 

Tout moun sa yo deja pedi. Pèp la pa bay yo regle anyen. Li tande radyo, li tande emisyon pale anpil yo, epi li tchwipe yo.

Le président Michel Martelly, et la Première Dame, Sophia Martelly, ont exprimé leur tristesse à l'annonce de la mort samedi de l'ancienne actrice de la Troupe Languichatte « Mantoute » nommé agent exécutif intérimaire-adjoint à la Mairie de Delmas en octobre dernier. Marie-Andrée Raymond Jeudy est décédée à Port-au-Prince, dans la soirée du vendredi 18 Janvier 2013. « En cette pénible circonstance, le Couple présidentiel, au nom du peuple haïtien, salue le départ de Mme Jeudy… la Présidence de la République et la population haïtienne sont très reconnaissantes du travail accompli par Mme Marie-Andrée Raymond Jeudy dans le monde artistique », lit-on dans le communiqué de la présidence. Le Premier ministre Laurent Lamothe a également réagi exprimant sa peine.

Haïti - Reconstruction : Le Japon finance 4 nouveaux projets

Mercredi, Kenji Kuratomi, l'Ambassadeur du Japon en Haïti, dans le cadre du programme d' « Aide sous forme de Dons aux Micro-Projets Locaux contribuant à la Sécurité Humaine » (APL) du gouvernement japonais, a signé 4 contrats avec des organisations haïtiennes dans le secteur de l'éducation, de la santé et de la sécurité alimentaire.

Secteur de l'Éducation :
1 - Contrat de construction de l'école Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Esprit à Hinche, financé à hauteur de 145,391 dollars américains. Ce projet initié par la Sœur Josette Augustin, des Sœurs missionnaires de l'Immaculée-Conception, permettra la construction de six salles de classe répondant aux normes.

2 - Contrat de construction d'une école communautaire à Diribou, dans la commune de l'Estère, financé à hauteur de 120,715 dollars qui permettra d'améliorer la qualité de l'éducation dans toute la zone, selon Belony Pierre, coordonnateur du « Mouvman peyizan pou lavansman Lakwa zon Diribou » (MPAKD).

Secteur alimentaire :
3 - Contrat de modernisation de la laiterie de Bon-Repos, financé à hauteur de 123,177 dollars, signé avec Vétérimed, qui permettra de contribuer non seulement au transfert de compétences sur la technologie laitière, mais aussi d'améliorer la production de dérivés, tels entre autres que le yaourt, le fromage, le lait stérilisé...

Secteur de la santé :
4 - Contrat de construction, d'un Centre de santé dans l'Artibonite, financé à hauteur de 119,846 dollars, qui permettra d'améliorer la couverture médicale des accouchements en milieu rural, surtout parmi la population vivant dans des zones enclavées et de contribuer à la réduction de la mortalité maternelle à Montrouis.



Selon l'Ambassadeur Kenji Kuratomi « [...] Ces projets assureront à long terme, par leurs effets multiplicateurs, le développement socio-économique de chacune des zones concernées. Soyez assurés que le Japon continuera de supporter les efforts déployés en vue d'améliorer les conditions de vie de votre société à travers notre programme APL. »

GASTONIA, N.C. --  A former Gastonia pastor pleaded guilty on Friday to charges he had sex with two minors while in Haiti on a church mission.

Larry Michael Bollinger, 67, was indicted last May. He was accused of traveling to Haiti to engage in illicit sexual conduct with two minors. The girls were 11 and 12 years old, authorities have said.

Bollinger initially pleaded guilty to the charges last May. But on Friday, he changed that plea.

He will be sentenced at a later date. Each of the sex charges are punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A Lutheran minister for 33 years, Bollinger was pastor at Christ's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Stanley when he and his wife left for Haiti to work with the Lazarus Project in 2004.

A mostly Lutheran ministry, the Lazarus Project runs a vocational school and medical clinic in Haiti.

According to an indictment, the alleged misconduct took place in 2009. A spokesman for The Lazarus Project said Bollinger worked for several years as coordinator, but was removed from the position when the allegations arose.

Prosecutors said four victims were identified, but Bollinger was accused of illicit conduct with two girls.

A federal magistrate in May ordered Bollinger jailed pending his trial.

"The government's forecast of its evidence is disturbing and suggests the defendant, an ordained minister, repeatedly engaged in sexual conduct with girls as young as 11 and 12 years of age while in Haiti doing relief work," U.S. Magistrate Judge David Keesler wrote in his order of detention.

"The defendant has been treated in several settings for mental health conditions and sexual addiction."
