Who are the NGO’s working for?

By: Italia Vague

Through self inflicted and natural crisis, we have seen too many organizations invade our shores with empty promises and false hope. Those Non Government Organizations (NGO's) come under different forms and labels. From your bible stumping religious groups to so called justice missions, they come from all over the world bringing with them their views of democracy and of course their appetite for power.

It would be unfair to say they are all bad. Groups like the French NGO "Medecins sans frontiers" are commendable for the assistance they provided after the devastating earthquake of 2010.

On the other hand, there are the predators who prey on our young people. Last January Larry Michael Bollinger, 68, of Gastonia, was jailed for engaging in illicit sexual conduct while on mission trips in Haiti. According to court documents and the sentencing hearing, Bollinger travelled regularly to Haiti because of his involvement with the Lazarus Project, a charity that supports two charitable organizations in the country, the Hope House and The Village of Hope School. Bollinger pleaded guilty to charges of sexual molestation on four young Haitian girls aged 11 to 16. Court records indicate that one of the victims said Bollinger offered to pay her food and money in exchange for sexual acts.

Last week, Haitian Police arrested 62-year-old Michael Karl Geilenfeld, an American citizen who operated The St. Joseph's Home for Boys in Delmas on charges of indecent assault and criminal conspiracy.

Now comes the case of International organizations that want to interfere in our legal system. The Martelly/Lamothe administration has made no bones about its commitment to rid Haiti of killers, drug traffickers and kidnappers. These people have been on the run and have not been at peace since the duo Martelly-Lamothe came to power. Again, NGO's are interfering and have become pro bono defenders of drug dealers. The south coast of Haiti has become a no man's land with Jamaican, Colombian and other South American drug operatives using the area as launching pad for their drug trade and at the same time enlist the help of citizens including law enforcement officers to accomplish their task.

It is no secret that this administration has launched an all out war against drug traffickers especially in the south. By turning the island of Ile a Vache into a tropical paradise, it's obvious the drug dealers will lose an important and strategic landing and launching site. They have teamed up with corrupt politicians in the area to finance demonstrations against the tourism project in a desperate attempt to keep their hold on the island.

The Jamaican cartel hired Maltunès Jean Lamy, a former police officer who went AWOL from his post at a sub station in Port-au-Prince in order to do the Jamaican's dirty job.

Lamy's work for the drug traffickers was not limited to providing intelligence and protection. He also was involved with a group that tried to discourage police presence on the island.

Sources close to the investigation have confirmed that Lamy was arrested for the murder of Saint-Cyr Peramel in the Delmas 2 neighborhood.  Critics and detractors have long tried to politicize Lamy's detention. These are those same critics who have done all they could to sabotage the government's efforts to improve the business environment and attract investments needed to make this island paradise, one of the best tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

To add salt to injury, some French organizations are now trying to paint Lamy as an angel. As a long time resident of the south, it makes me wonder about their motivation. Is there a French connection trying to control our shores by protecting drug dealers?

It's time for these so called human rights organizations to come clean and let us know whom they are working for. The Haitian government has put forth tremendous efforts to change the image of our country. Infrastructure works abound, tourism has known unprecedented increase, investors are responding to the call that Haiti is open for business. Let's keep drug dealers and murderers behind bars where they belong.

Governing differently: Martelly and Lamothe go to the people.-

By: Adma Riché

The Martelly/Lamothe administration continues to innovate and create proximity that never existed before between the people and its government.

The island of La Gonave which has long been just a piece of land in the middle of the ocean, was showcased on live television on Saturday and stands to rip the benefits of this historic day.

"Gouvènman an Lakay Ou" (The government in your town) is the brainchild of Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe. It's a forum where the entire government including the Prime minister, cabinet ministers, general managers and decision makers come to a community in a town hall style meeting to listen to the population and take actions. It is the government's tool for popular dialogue in order to inquire about the urgent needs of host communities, find sustainable solutions, fight against social exclusion and injustice, promote local governance, and encourage economic and social progress in the country's most remote regions.

The tenth edition held this past Saturday at La Gonave was special. Long neglected by previous administrations, the people on the island were left to fan for themselves. It was their opportunity to address the government directly and make their voice heard. The government delivered 23 fishing boats as well as fish aggregating devices to fishermen's associations. Two computer labs were installed in Pointe-à-Raquette and Anse-a-Galet and an all-terrain vehicle was delivered to the police station to help keep the island safe.

La Gonave is now part of the "Special Plans" program. As such, the island will have its own set of construction and road maintenance equipment. The Health ministry will provide a boat ambulance to transport critical care patients to hospitals on the main land.

For the Special Plan of La Gonave, the Martelly / Lamothe administration has mobilized 60 million gourdes, 20 million for strengthening small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and 40 million for the construction of schools, roads, health, sports and cultural facilities.

On the eve of the main event, Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe visited the town of Pointe-à-Raquette to inquire about the situation of extreme poverty and address the social needs of the villagers. Concerned about the socio-economic situation on the island, the prime minister visited the health center, the national school, the playground and habitats in order to be better informed of the precarious living conditions of the population. He also took the opportunity to distribute school kits to children. 250 desks and chairs made of recycled plastic bags were also delivered to the schools.

"We are outraged by what we saw. But we will not stand idly watching people live in this situation. We will accelerate the special plan for the island in order to improve the living conditions of the population; we want to build infrastructure" added Mr. Lamothe.

"Our government will not allow La Gonave to perish, it must not die. It is our moral obligation to come to the needs of the population. We are deeply touched and want to act quickly and effectively" he added.

Residents of Pointe-à-Raquette consider the visit of the Prime Minister and his ministerial delegation as a historic event. They unanimously testify to the Government's attention and determination to improve their living conditions.

Saturday September 13, 2014 is a day that will not be soon forgotten by the population of La Gonave. Several thousand residents came from every corner of the island to meet their government. They were pleasantly surprised when President Michel Martelly showed up. Emotions ran high as he took to the podium to address a crowd that could hardly control its enthusiasm. The President brought a message of hope. One teary eyes villager confessed that in his 72 years on earth, this was the first time he came face to face with a President.

After a brief moment of entertainment by the President, it was time to get down to business. Led by Prime Minister Lamothe, government ministers start assessing the needs of the population and offer solutions.

The first commitment involves a grant of 1,750.000 gourdes to the federation that regroups twenty merchant associations on the island. These funds will help strengthen the Federation and 300 members will benefit directly from this grant. The Government plans to contribute more to this structure. The Ministry of Commerce is committed to offer financial support to 45 small entrepreneurs.

The Ministry of Agriculture plans to rehabilitate mangroves and launch treatment and soil conservation programs in La Gonave. Fishermen's associations of La Gonave received 180 coolers, 180 machetes and bowls. Two fishing shops will soon be built on the island. A thousand agricultural tools were also distributed to farmers.

In education, five scholarships of excellence were awarded to students who scored higher on the official exams. Ten more scholarships will be awarded to other young people of La Gonave. In addition to the educational infrastructures that will be built on the island, the Government plans to carry out an aggressive urban renewal program. A public square was built and inaugurated the previous day by the Prime Minister.

As part of La Gonave's special plan, fifty additional projects will be carried out on the island. They include construction of 200 social housing units in Pointe-à-Raquette; the rehabilitation of the health center; street paving in Anse-a-Galet and Pointe-à-Raquette; the construction of the road linking the two towns; rehabilitation of Anse-a-Galet's port and the construction of a fishing village.

In all, the government made over forty promises to the people of La Gonave. With a completion rate of 70% for previous commitments made to the nine communities that previously hosted the event, it is fair to say that it will not be long before the islanders start seeing improvements in their living conditions.

There were some light moments at the La Gonave's     edition of GOL. The local compas band "Deal" finally found the spotlight. As DJ Kash Kash blared their hit song titled La Gonave, the lead singer and the bandleader took their seats at the head table next to the Prime Minister. After exposing their difficulty to Mr. Lamothe, they walked out with a contract to produce three jingles promoting government programs. We must also mention the lady who has been teaching on the island for 42 years. After awkwardly calling the Prime Minister "Michel Lamothe", she offered a special song that sounded like she was making it up as she sang. They were farmers, fishermen, teachers, and community organizers among those who had a chance to talk face to face with their government leaders.

The "Gouvènman an Lakay Ou" program is one of the highlights of the Martelly/Lamothe administration style of government. Leaving the comfort of the cozy offices in the capital to endure a nine and half hour marathon under less than perfect condition is a way for President Martelly and Prime Minister Lamothe to show their engagement to the Haitian people. As President Martelly said, there would be no government without the people. "We are here to serve", he concluded.

Commentary / An Examination of Conscience.- (By Paul Kendrick)

(Paul Kendrick)

I KNOW THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

SO, WHAT'S STOPPING ME?

US FEDERAL JUDGE JOHN WOODCOCK IS THREATENING TO PUT ME IN JAIL AND/OR FINE ME TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IF I PROVIDE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION, EVIDENCE AND TESTIMONY TO POLICE AND JUSTICE OFFICIALS IN HAITI.

DO I SIMPLY GO ALONG WITH JUDGE WOODCOCK AND ALLOW THE CRIES FOR HELP FROM FRIGHTENED AND SUFFERING ABUSE VICTIMS IN HAITI TO TAKE A BACK SEAT TO JUDGE WOODCOCK'S COURT ORDER TO SEAL ALL DOCUMENTS IN A CIVIL LAWSUIT AGAINST ME?

Law enforcement and Justice officials in Haiti have launched a criminal investigation against
U.S. citizen, Michael Geilenfeld, director of an orphanage in Haiti and the same multi accused child molester who is suing me for defamation.

As a result of the discovery process in my civil trial, I am in possession of important and timely information that will assist the Haitian National Police in their investigation of criminal child sexual abuse charges against Geilenfeld in Haiti.

My lawyers and the lawyers representing Geilenfeld have the same information.

Judge Woodcock has threatened me with "contempt of court" and ordered me not to disseminate any of the documents obtained during the discovery process.

Sadly, I cannot rest assured that Judge Woodcock fully comprehends the cultural complexities of a place like Haiti where child sexual abuse is epidemic.

Time is of the essence.

Eight days ago, on Friday, September 5, 2014, Geilenfeld was arrested by the Haitian National Police on suspicion of charges of indecent assault of children and criminal conspiracy, Port-au-Prince General Prosecutor Charles Kerson told the Associated Press. Geilenfeld is now imprisoned at a penitentiary in Port au Prince.

Portland, Maine Attorney Peter DeTroy, Geilenfeld's lead attorney in the civil case, is exerting extreme pressure and influence on Haiti government officials in an attempt to obtain Geilenfeld's release from a Haiti prison, thus enabling Geilenfeld's quick return to the US where he will be safe from prosecution in Haiti.

By his comments to a US newspaper, DeTroy is paying great insult to Port au Prince Prosecutor, Charles Kerson, Haiti National Police and Haiti Justice officials, all of whom participated in the arrest of Geilenfeld and the closing of his orphanage.

DeTroy and his law partner, Attorney Russell Pierce, are telling reporters that the charges against Geilenfeld brought by Prosecutor Kerson and Haiti government officials are "false and suspicious...baseless...without merit," insinuating in a very real way that Prosecutor Kerson and Haiti government officials are puppets and stooges of outside special interest groups.

Child protection advocates know from experience that if Geilenfeld remains in jail until his trial (and is not granted bail); a) children will be safe from his abuse / Geilenfeld is a multi accused child molester; b) Geilenfeld, now under extreme pressure, will not be able to threaten and intimidate victims and witnesses; (c) more victims will come forward if they can be assured that Geilnfeld cannot retaliate against them and; d) Geilenfeld will not have an opportunity to escape from Haiti to avoid prosecution.

We must show respect to the people of Haiti. The children who were abused, and their families, and the Haitian society, have a legitimate right to see Michael Geilenfeld brought to justice for crimes committed against Haitian children in the Haiti judicial system.

In February 2013, Geilenfeld and Hearts with Haiti, a North Carolina-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that raises money for Geilnfeld's orphanages in Haiti, filed a defamation law suit against me in federal court in Portland, Maine, alleging that, for the previous two years, I published "false and heinous" allegations of Geilenfeld's involvement in child sexual abuse.

The civil trial will begin in three weeks. At least seven Haitian men will offer their testimonies that they were sexually abused by Geilenfeld when they were children living in Geilenfeld's care at his orphanage in Haiti.

I believe the courageous men who will testify at trial.

I stand by them.

It is painful for me to listen to the horrific and disgusting things that Geilenfeld did to them when they were children. The world will soon share in their suffering.

These men have placed themselves at great personal risk to help protect other children from abuse in Haiti.

They are heroes.
