A historic day for Haitian diplomacy

By: Hubert Antoine

As this historic Tuesday January 7th emerges, Haitian diplomacy shows its might by getting the Dominican Republic to discuss a decision of an internal nature that violates the rights of its own citizens. Obviously in a weak position, the Dominicans who were on the defensive could not find a better springboard to restore their defiled honor in front of the international community. Ouanaminthe was their place of confession.

The arbitrary decision of the Dominican Constitutional Court, on which no compromise can be made, violates the right to citizenship of thousands of people. Supported by international institutions and organizations, the actions of our representatives who enjoy strong support from members of the Haitian civil society show some dynamism and desire to assert Haiti as the mother of freedom and one of the countries who have long struggled to defend human rights around the world. Thus it becomes very important for the Dominicans to comply with international legal instruments and human rights.

Politicians quickly understood and were eager to take advantage of the opportunity offered by Venezuela to rescue the Dominican Constitutional Court plunged into the doom of their crimes under the cover of the law. There is no need to remind you that the racist decision of the Dominican Constitutional Court also embarrassed the highest level of Dominican authorities who wanted to redeem themselves before the international community.

Today, they are faced with a public opinion visibly against them and may end up in very bad shape before the court of history. Their priority for now is to rid themselves of the image of predatory human rights violators that they are faced with through their clumsiness and / or bad faith.

However, the cohabitation between these sister nations whose history has been quite controversial, is pushing the current generation to overcome their contradictions to work together in order to find solutions to common problems. Willingness to resolve disputes amicably as displayed by the Haitian authorities is highly commendable. This should not prevent Haiti to continue to defend itself with pride and dignity in the face the Dominican Republic which often adopts rules that violate the rights of Haitian nationals living in or transiting through its territory.

As one of the largest trading partners of the Dominican Republic, the Republic of Haiti is invested with the capacity to defend the interests of all its citizens, including those who participate in bi-national trade and produce goods and services for export to neighboring land.

If some critics have slammed the initiative to clear up the dispute between the two Republics, it is simply because they do not understand the willingness of people from both countries sharing this island to live in peace, despite the excesses of their leaders. The benefits of these discussions will probably be felt in the next few months and then we will understand the importance of these talks.
