How can you celebrate your mission in light of 25 years of accusations of sexual abuse? 2/11/2012 5:11:06 PM Parishioners, Please forgive my omission of the following communication - in it, Mr. Barger wrote to me, and Mr. Barger committed the Haitian Timoun Foundation to cease "fundraising efforts for them (Geilenfeld's organizations) pending a clean exoneration of all charges" - the governments' investigation of Michael Geilenfeld is ongoing. Mr. Geilenfeld has not been exonerated of all charges. If you read the material I have been offering you, you will see that Mike Geilenfeld has been accused of sexual abuse for 25 years. The accusations continue today, from different people. Since Mr. Barger and the Haitian Timoun Foundation has suspended the fundraising for St. Joseph's and its affiliates (according to his email to me), logic would seem to place that same suspension of fundraising done by Mr. Barger's church. As you are aware, the US and Haitian governments are investigating allegations that Michael Geilenfeld, the founder of St. Joseph's Home for Boys in Port Au Prince Haiti, has been sexually abusing children in Haiti for over 25 years. These investigations continue today. I understand that your church has just returned from a trip to visit St. Joseph's Home for Boys to "celebrate" over 25 years of that ministry. While it is good and proper to celebrate God's work in the world, I do not think it proper to celebrate a man that has been accused of sexual abuse for over 25 years - Michael Geilenfeld, the founder of the orphanages your church has just returned to "celebrate". Your very presence there seems to belie your email of some weeks ago - that you and your church and your foundation - Haitian Timoun Foundation - would not financially support Michael Geilenfeld and his orphanages Cyrus Siebert, Haitian journalist, has interviewed dozens of young men in Port au Prince that allege Michael Geilenfeld has sexually abused them. Cyrus Siebert covered the Doug Perlitz case. Perlitz, a catholic priest, has been convicted of child sex abuse in Haiti, and is serving a 20 year sentence. Mr. Perlitz confessed to his crimes. When Siebert was covering the Perlitz case, young men in Port au Prince began contacting Siebert saying they had been sexually abused by Mike Geilenfeld. "When the allegations became public, Perlitz and his supporters denied them. According to the Connecticut Post, some former board members claimed that Perlitz had been "railroaded" by greedy locals who wanted money. In a September 2008 fundraising letter to donors, Perlitz supporters, including Father Paul Carrier and some individual members of the Order of Malta, asked for continued financial support for the Project." Don't you think this quote could describe your continued support of Michael Geilenfeld, and the continued support of Michael Geilenfeld by groups such as Hearts With Haiti based in North Carolina; Hearts With Haiti raised over $2 million for Geilenfeld in 2010. "At his sentencing hearing, Perlitz listened to the testimonies from six of the Haitian boys who claimed they were sexually abused by him. Telling their stories through a translator, the boys talked of being swayed by the clothes, food, and money Perlitz gave them in exchange for sexual favors. Many of the boys were only 11 years old when the abuse began and told the judge that they were afraid that they would be thrown back to the streets if they told others of the sexual abuse. Some of the six young Haitian men in the courtroom that day said that dozens of other boys were abused by Perlitz. The prosecutor concluded her case by claiming that Perlitz had sexually abused more than 30 boys. " How long will you and others keep ignoring the shouts of the children, now grown to young men...they are speaking about the sexual abuse that Michael Geilenfeld has been committing for so many years. Yet you do not hear these cries for help. You seem to buy the common line of argument - "Satan is behind these accusations; we need to pray to God, and continue his good work." Duarte, a Portuguese man, was also convicted of child abuse in Haiti. I called Mr. Lajoie several months ago and asked him about Geilenfeld. He told me that when he was covering the Duarte case, he heard the same thing that Siebert heard - that Geilenfeld has been sexually abusing youth in Haiti for many years. "Everybody knows he is doing it." "I am surprised he has not cut and run yet, to minimize his losses. I'm surprised he has not left. Everyone knows he is doing it." In one of his articles, Lajoie writes "There was something messianic about the man." Wow. This reminds me of Geilenfeld. Ephiphany Suwanee members - do you think there is something messianic in the man when you meet Geilenfeld and ponder what he has built? Do you feel the supreme presence of God when you worship on the porch at St. Joseph's, and see the boys conduct the service? Do you ponder the mystery of God when the boys wake you at 5 Am in the morning when they attend prayers, you are lying in your cot, and you hear the singing and the "bravos"? I challenge you and the members of your church to call Mr. Lajoie at the Windsor Star. Ask him. "Did you hear stories about Geilenfeld sexually abusing children while you were covering the father John Duarte sex abuse case?" Please, don't continue to turn a blind eye. Mr. Barger, if you are unwilling to take your blinders off, my prayer is that some in your church's congregation will inquire. Don't believe me. But do your own homework. Call the journalists that have covered these stories. Ask them. As you find out more information, contact other people. Listen to their stories. You might have supported Geilenfeld for years. If Geilenfeld is committing sexual abuse, this does not soil the Word of God. What soils the Word of God is ignoring the cries of the victims. Do your own homework Church of the Ephiphany in Suwanee. Don't take my word. Don't take Mr. Barger's word. Don't take Hearts with Haiti's word. Don't take St. Joseph's word. Don't take Mike Geilenfeld's word......until you have truly done your homework. Contact the journalists. Contact the non-profits that supported Doug Perlitz and John Duarte in Haiti and ask them about their experiences. How did these "holy men" dupe them? How could this happen? For goodness sakes; don't stay silent. Don't ignore these allegations. Listen to the message of the Sandusky story. It is possible. It is highly likely. As you celebrate your mission to Haiti tomorrow, Epiphany Luthern Church of Suwanee, remember. Remember that Michael Geilenfeld has been accused of sexually abusing children since he was first in Haiti in the 1980s. Remember that the US and Haitian Governments are investigating Michael Geilenfeld. Remember that Mr. Barger stated that his organizations would no longer financially support Michael Geilenfeld and his organizations until the outcome of these investigations. Remember the victims of sexual abuse at the hands of Mr. Geilenfeld. Remember there are adults now, that have been been sexually and physically abused by Geilenfeld, that are dealing with that experience in their spirit and soul, and many of them are alone in this struggle. And they know that there are hundreds, if not thousands of people ignoring their calls for justice. Be still......and think about that. Or, perhaps you can choose to believe that all the Haitian people that are speaking about the sexual abuse perpetrated by Michael Geilenfeld are just plain liars. Liars. Jesus is a common man. A carpenter. Jesus was on the margins of society. He was vilified for what he spoke of. And we, the human race killed him. Let's don't continue to kill him. Listen to the folks on the margins. Give them a chance.
