HAITIANS BUILD TIES WITH KOREANS AT INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS FORUM

Haitians Build Ties with Koreans at International Business Forum

SEOUL, Korea (defend.ht) -Not present for the inauguration ceremonies and festivities for the Prime Minister and the new Executive Cabinet, Laurent Lamothe, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs traveled to Korea to participate in the Korea-Latin American and Caribbean (Korea-LAC) Business Forum.

It was a historic mission for Haitian foreign policy as Laurent Lamothe became the first high-ranking official to visit South Korea, a country that fifty years ago was poorer than many countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and today boasts a per capita income more than three times higher than the richest of these countries.

Minister Lamothe chimed in on Korea's recent economic prowess in regards to Haitian insterests:
"It was an opportunity for us to talk to the Korean business community, which is the 12th largest economy in the world and part of the G20. We want them to take their business to Haiti."

Haiti was one of two guests of honor at the Korea-LAC forum where more than 200 large Korean companies competed for business in Haiti's region. The new Minister of Foreign Affairs presented Haiti as a viable option to corporations attending the event.

Apparel manufacturer SAE-E plans to create 20,000 jobs in the near future taking over the Northern Industrial Park in Caracol. Cable Manufacturer LS Cable expects to begin feasibility studies in Haiti in effort to lay fiber-optic technology on the island. Minister Lamothe expects to meet with 3 more corporations interested in investing in Haiti.

The Korea-LAC forum is jointly organized by the Inter-American Development Bank and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance of Korea, in collaboration with the Korea Export and Import Bank (KEXIM), the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) and the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI).

The event's purpose is to expand and strengthen the commercial ties between Asia, specifically Korea, and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) through the exchange of ideas and experiences on trade and investment promotion and the identification of specific business opportunities.

On Friday, Minister Lamothe will meet with Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kim Sung-Hwan. The two will lay the ground work for the first diplomatic mission of a Head of State of Haiti to Asia; President Michel Martelly.
